Study abroad is an enriching and rewarding part of your academic experience at The New School! Semester and short-term programs are open to students throughout the university. It’s never too early to start planning for study abroad. In fact, the earlier the better! Whether you are a first-year student thinking about a study abroad opportunity in your degree or approaching your final year and considering postgraduate international research fellowships, we look forward to supporting you in your upcoming global adventure. To begin your study abroad journey we recommend that you start with: Attending a study abroad general information session . Our office hosts general information sessions every other week every semester. These general information sessions are designed to familiarize you with the study abroad process at The New School. In the session, you will learn more about the different program types, study abroad policies, finances in relation to study abroad, approved programs for your major, and the application processes for each kind of program. As such, this is the first step we recommend that all students take when considering studying abroad. Information sessions are offered both in person and virtually . Reviewing the list of approved programs by major and any major-specific study abroad requirements . Many departments at The New School have a list of pre-approved programs that their students can participate in. Approved programs are programs that were reviewed by your major department and determined to work well with major requirements. In addition, many departments at The New School have requirements for when their students can go abroad. You can find all of this information on the approved programs by school and major page linked above. Schedule a meeting with a Advisor . While this is not a requirement, we recommend that you schedule a meeting with a Advisor on Starfish. You and your Advisor will discuss the programs you are interested in, requirements for study abroad, timelines and deadlines, financial policies, application instructions, and more. This meeting is often very helpful for students, so we recommend that you schedule an appointment with one of our advisors. Speak with your Academic Advisor about your plans to study abroad . You are required to maintain progress toward your academic degree while studying abroad. This means that the credits you receive from study abroad need to count towards your graduation requirements. We recommend that you identify 1-3 programs you are interested in and bring that information along with information about classes you plan to take while abroad to your Academic Advisor for review. Information about which courses you can take abroad can be found on that specific program’s direct website. You can find your Academic Advisor and schedule an appointment with them on Starfish. Review general study abroad policies and familiarize yourself with the application process . Please make sure you review this information thoroughly before opening an application for study abroad.
